How often should you sweep your chimney?
Article hero image
For a wood-burning stove in regular use, once a year is the standard recommendation. If you burn heavily through the winter, or if you sometimes burn wood that isn’t fully seasoned, twice a year is safer.
Why frequency matters
Every fire leaves a little soot and creosote behind. Left to build up, that deposit narrows the flue, reduces the draw, and — at worst — becomes a chimney fire risk. Regular sweeping keeps the flue clear, the stove drawing well, and your annual insurance certificate up to date.
- Wood-burning stove, regular use: once a year
- Heavy use or unseasoned wood: twice a year
- Open fires and smokeless fuel: ask us — it varies
Booking your sweep in late summer or early autumn means you’re ready for the first cold snap. We cover Wedmore and the surrounding Somerset area and issue an insurer-recognised certificate on the day.
