Five signs your stove needs a service

Stoves are simple, robust things — but a few tell-tale signs mean it’s time for some attention.

What to watch for

• The door doesn’t seal tightly, or the rope looks flattened and grey
• Glass blackens quickly no matter how dry your wood is
• The fire is hard to get going or won’t stay lit — often a draw problem
• You can see cracks in the fire bricks or a warped baffle plate
• Rust or flaking around the body or flue collar
